A Masterclass With Biserka Suran
ENFF will have the pleasure of hosting the masterclass by the director of Scenes with my Father, Biserka Šuran. The masterclass will take place on November 23, tickets TBA. The Q&A and Masterclass will be moderated by the artistic director of the Movies That Matter festival, Margje de Koning. ‘So I wanted to make a film about the past, about moments that had already happened, about a country that disappeared, about nostalgia and longing. But how do you do that? How do you make a film about things you can’t see?’
In this Masterclass, filmmaker Biserka Šuran takes you on her film journey. Through the love letters from her parents, the use of archive material from the former Yugoslavia and the design of an abstract space as a means to enter the past.
About Scenes with My Father:
In Scenes with My Father filmmaker Biserka Šuran, takes her father on a trip down memory lane in which she revives scenes from their country of birth, former Yugoslavia.
Memories are reflected in cinematic decor sets in which they converse about nationality, identity, love, dreams and regrets. Love letters, archive material and anecdotes from family members give the audience an insight on the trials and tribulations the family experienced when they were forced
to leave their home country. This symbolic road-trip therapeutically heals wounds from the past as the director and daughter Biserka creates space to relate to her father’s experience and inevitable choices. The result is an inspiring conversation that many viewers might like to have with a parent.

‘Dus ik wilde een film maken over het verleden, over allemaal dingen die al waren gebeurt, over een land dat verdween, over nostalgie en verlangen. Maar hoe doe je dat? Hoe maak je een film over dingen die je niet kunt zien?’
In deze Masterclass neemt filmmaker Biserka Šuran je mee op haar filmreis. Via de liefdesbrieven van haar ouders, het gebruik van archiefmateriaal uit voormalig Joegoslavië en het vormgeven van een abstracte ruimte als middel om het verleden te betreden.

In Scènes met mijn vader neemt filmmaker Biserka Šuran haar vader mee op een trip down memory lane waarin ze scènes uit hun geboorteland, voormalig Joegoslavië, doet herleven. Herinneringen worden weerspiegeld in filmische decorsets waarin ze in gesprek gaan over nationaliteit, identiteit, liefde, dromen en spijt. Terwijl herinneringen boven komen, geven liefdesbrieven, archiefmateriaal en inzichten van familieleden het publiek een persoonlijk verslag van de beproevingen die een familie doormaakt wanneer ze gedwongen worden hun thuisland te verlaten. Deze symbolische roadtrip heelt therapeutisch wonden uit het verleden terwijl regisseur en dochter Biserka ruimte creëert om zich te verhouden tot de ervaring van haar vader en de onvermijdelijke keuzes. Het resultaat is een inspirerend gesprek dat veel kijkers wellicht graag met een ouder zou willen voeren.
