Panel: 40 Years After Chornobyl

Saturday 7 November | 19:45 | Filmhuis Den Haag | Zaal 6 | Free admission

Forty years after the Chornobyl disaster, its consequences are still being felt – in the landscapes left behind, in the lives of those affected, and in the way Europe thinks about nuclear power, state secrecy and environmental catastrophe. But Chornobyl is not only a story of the past. It is also a story about memory, responsibility and what happens when institutions fail to tell the truth.

This panel brings together filmmakers to reflect on what Chornobyl means four decades later. How has the disaster been remembered – and forgotten? What can personal testimony and documentary cinema reveal that official histories leave out? And what does it mean today, in a Ukraine where the legacy of the disaster intersects with another devastating war?

A conversation about memory, truth and the long shadow of one of the defining catastrophes of the twentieth century. Featuring guest filmmakers Lyuba Knorozok, producer of Special Operation; Kristina Mikhailova, director of River Dreams; and Äsel Kadyrkhanova, a visual artist and researcher.

Admission to the panel is free, but requires registration.
