Bottlemen

Winner of the Heart of Sarajevo for best documentary film, Bottlemen is an homage to a vibrant, essential, yet largely invisible community, as well as an eco-western and a stark contemplation of where our society is going.

On the outskirts of Belgrade, in Serbia, one of the largest unsanitary landfills in Europe stretches over the remains of the ancient Vinca civilization. What was once the cradle of European civilization now mirrors our modern lifestyle fueled by overconsumption. A group of mostly Roma workers, known as ‘bottlemen’, make a precarious living on these unstable mountains of toxic, steaming, sometimes burning waste. Their community is about to face a new threat.
