ENFF On Tour: Celts, a Perceptive Serbian Comedy Drama in Kino Rotterdam

The Eastern Neighbors Film Festival is visiting Rotterdam again with its special On Tour program. This time we will screen one of the most successful movies of our last edition, the Serbian drama CELTS (English subtitles), in KINO on October 19 at 19:00 hours. Our visitors will get the chance to meet our special guests, actor Jovan Belobrkovic and join a small cocktail party.

Since its premiere at the Berlinale, promising young female writer/director Milica Tomovic won critics and many awards for her debut including the prestigious Heart of Sarajevo as Best Director.

Celts is a comic drama about the confrontation of three generations with the collapse of the political system and the social changes that befell Serbia after the breakup of Yugoslavia. The year is 1993 and the war is in full swing. Inflation and sanctions put additional pressure on the already impoverished citizens, but everyone is trying to bring a semblance of normalcy into everyday life.

Marijana is throwing a birthday party for her eight-year-old daughter, Minja. As the night falls, adults, grandparents, friends, and relatives join the gathering. The situation slowly becomes chaotic and full of tense conversations. With each newly opened bottle, hidden tensions come to the surface. Marijana slowly begins to feel isolated and over time realizes that she wants more than drunken guests and an uninterested husband. She leaves the party, which is slowly coming to an end, just like the country she grew up in.
