Sevdah is a feeling about life imbued with melancholy, yearning and beautiful sorrow. This film takes us on an intimate journey through the world of, as often called, the Bosnian Blues. The screening will be followed by Q&A with the musician Damir Imamović.

Synopsis

The song that expresses the feeling of Sevdah is known as Sevdalinka. This unique song-form that tell of love and the pain of love, has been alive over 400 years in Bosnia and often compared with fado or blues. The death of their mutual friend and a passionate fan of Sevdalinka, Farah, has brought musician Damir Imamovic and director Marina Andree Skop together. Trying to deal with their own loss and grief, they decide to create a film about Sevdah capturing local culture and experiences of common men as well as known professionals like Amira Medunjanin. The result is an emotionally charged, lyrical and visual journey to the very heart and soul of Bosnia, a story of personal loss echoing the destiny of a small country, told through its deeply soulful music.

Before the screening of the film Sevdah, you can attend A multimedia lecture by Damir Imamović – ‘East’ and ‘West’ in the genre of Sevdah, at 16.00 hours in Filmhuis Den Haag.
